SAIT POLYTECHNIC WELL REPRESENTED

WorldSkills is coming to Calgary and SAIT Polytechnic is well represented on Team Canada with seven members – the most from any one post-secondary in the country.

“The Team Canada competitors from SAIT have all devoted themselves to success through countless hours of preparation and training,” said Guy Mallabone, SAIT’s Vice President External Relations and Chairman of the WorldSkills Calgary 2009 Board of Directors.  “These young adults are ambassadors of trades and technology. We hope Calgarians are proud to have such a strong group of local contenders in the competition.”

Leading up to the competition, the SAIT competitors on Team Canada have trained full-time – at least 40 hours per week – for the past four months. That training is in addition to the preparation for previous Skills competitions, including provincials and nationals, in order to be named as the best in Canada in their trade or technology for 22 years or age or under.

The SAIT competitors – and the other representatives from Team Canada – can be cheered on at WorldSkills Calgary 2009 from September 1 – 7 at Stampede Park. Team Canada will compete along with more than 900 competitors representing 51 countries in 45 skill categories. Hailed as the pinnacle of global skills, trades, and technology competition, nearly 150,000 spectators and 5,000 international experts, delegates and judges are expected to attend.

SAIT is a Founding Sponsor of WorldSkills Calgary 2009 and is host of the official Competitors’ Village during the event.

TEAM ALBERTA GOES TO WASHINGTON

Calgary’s first entry into the prestigious international Solar Decathlon was a success, with Team Alberta placing sixth out of 20 university-led teams chosen from around the world.

The Solar Decathlon is a competition in which teams of college and university students compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar powered house.

Team Alberta was a collaborative project by students, faculty and staff at four Calgary schools -- SAIT Polytechnic, University of Calgary, Mount Royal University and the Alberta College of Art + Design. Together, they created their ENMAX SolAbode and successfully operated the solar-powered home in the U.S. capital.“SAIT has made a very significant investment in green technologies,” says Alex Zahavich, Director of Applied Research and Innovation Services. “From the conversion of waste oils into biodiesel to water remediation, SAIT has demonstrated its commitment to new and emerging markets and technology, so it seemed like a natural extension to participate in the Solar Decathlon and put that commitment into practice.” T

he project showcased collaboration and team work and according to Zahavich was a “testament to the breadth of programming of the four schools, and their design and execution capabilities.”

The projects were awarded points based on energy efficiency, architectural design and market viability. “We obviously did well on all counts,” says Zahavich, “I got five enquiries about shipping while we were in Washington!”The 800-square foot SolAbode can be viewed at 14th Street and 16th Avenue. It will be displayed during the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver and will then return to Calgary and its owner, title sponsor ENMAX.
